Activities of the 13th Corps in the First World War (Iraq and Iran Fronts)

Abstract

The 13th Corps was established in 1911 as part of the restructuring of the Ottoman army, responsible for the Baghdad and Basra region. The Corps, which was deployed in a strategi cally important region and carried out activities to establish security and maintain public or der, was transferred to the Eastern Front with the outbreak of the First World War. However, the Corps headquarters was disbanded following delays in its transfer to its new duty station and the events that took place on the Eastern Front. On the other hand, the 13th Corps was reorganized in Baghdad in October 1915 due to the importance of the situation on the Tigris (Iraq) Front. In this context, he undertook various missions on this front, especially the Battle of Kûtü’l-Amare, and in the same year, he was again assigned to the Tigris (Iraq) Front in 1917 after independently conducting the Iran Operation. Until its disbandment in September 1918, the Corps fought defensive battles between south Mosul and north Baghdad to prevent the British army offensive. In this study, the military organization of the 13th Corps and its activities in the First World War are discussed. Thus, it is aimed to reveal the duties performed by the Corps on the Tigris (Iraq) Front and the Iranian Front. The sources of the article, which was prepared with an ori ginal content, consist of archival documents, source works and related research / copyrighted works. The findings obtained were evaluated by qualitative analysis method.
