Overcoming Passive Resistance or Questioning Israel’s Legitimacy: Hamas’s Al-Aqsa Flood Operation (October 7, 2023)

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors that compelled Hamas to carry out the October 7 operation, known as the Aqsa Flood. In the aftermath of the attack, various interpretations emerged, ranging from condemnation to praise, with differing perspectives on its implications. While seeking to contextualize Hamas’ assault, this study argues that the attack was intended to challenge certain aspects of resistance and struggle. In this regard, the study explores two key questions: What is the significance of the October 7 attack within Hamas’ broader resistance strategy? And what specific issues did Hamas seek to challenge through this operation? The study posits that Hamas aimed to call three issues into question through this attack. First, it sought to sustain active resistance and prevent the emergence of a passive, PLO-style approach. Second, it aimed to counter Arab-Israeli normalization efforts and reassert the Palestinian issue on the international agenda. Third, it intended to challenge the legitimacy and normalization of Israel’s existence, which had been reinforced through the Oslo process.
